Eye Allergies

At Mason Vision Center, serving Mason and Springboro, OH, we understand how frustrating eye allergies can be for our patients. Itchy, red, and watery eyes can disrupt your daily routine and make it hard to enjoy time outside. By understanding what causes these reactions and how to treat them, you can manage your symptoms and protect your eye health.

Eye Allergies

What Causes Eye Allergies?

Eye allergies, also called allergic conjunctivitis, occur when your immune system overreacts to allergens. Some common causes include:

•             Pollen from trees, grass, or weeds

•             Pet dander and fur

•             Dust mites and mold spores

•             Smoke or other airborne irritants

•             Contact lenses or certain eye makeup products

Symptoms to Watch For

Typical symptoms include itchy or burning eyes, excessive tearing, redness, and sensitivity to light. These symptoms may affect one or both eyes and often worsen after exposure to allergens. Eye allergies do not usually cause pain or thick discharge, which helps distinguish them from infections.

Treatment and Prevention

Managing eye allergies begins with minimizing exposure to known triggers. Staying indoors during high pollen levels, keeping windows closed, and using air purifiers are effective ways to reduce contact with allergens. Washing your hands and face after spending time outside also helps remove irritants from your skin and eyes.

Medications play a key role in symptom relief. Over-the-counter antihistamine or lubricating eye drops, as well as oral allergy medications, can offer short-term comfort. For more persistent cases, our optometrists may recommend prescription eye drops or allergy testing to better tailor your treatment plan. If you wear contact lenses, switching to daily disposables or limiting wear during allergy season can help reduce irritation.
